Humanist Life Stories

Our raison d'être

Traditionally, stories are used to convey cultural values and norms. They have a strong main character whom people can revere and emulate. Most religions use stories with such characters; Christians have Jesus, Muslims Mohamed, Jews Moses, and Buddhists Buddha.

Why do we humanists not have stories that illustrate our values and beliefs?

We, at the Community of Silicon Valley, started a project in 2008, called the Humanist Life Stories Project, asking humanists to contribute their stories. We collected an anthology of stories in our first booklet, “Who do Atheists Turn to in Times of Trouble? Humanist Life Stories I.”

These stories are not fiction; they are authentic personal accounts by real people describing their own struggles with challenging circumstances. Unlike traditional religious stories, our humanist stories are told by ordinary individuals who lived them. They reflect our human diversity and provide us insight into ways people meet challenges, without reliance on a God or Gods.
